Cara Cara Oranges

DSCN0708.JPGAs much as the weather outside suggests otherwise, rest assured it’s possible to get a little sunshine inside since orange season has arrived. There nothing more smile-inducing than the scent of an orange that has just been peeled.

New to me this year is the Cara Cara orange. A navel orange that has the external appearance of a regular orange, the inside colouring of a very pink grapefruit and the flavour reminiscent of a blood orange and grapefruit without the sourness. Juicy and very fragrant, they would be excellent for an early morning beverage, a cocktail, segmented in a salad of bitter winter lettuce like chicory topped with some chunks of salmon or for the purists, as is.

I found my Cara Cara oranges at the fruit & vegetable store near my place - I hope that most produce specialists also have the wisdom to carry these citrus gems...
